The Highland High School varsity dance team swept its final Illinois Drill Team Association regional competition when the ladies garnered first place with all three of their routines at the Highland IDTA Regional Competition Saturday at HHS.
Highland won first place in AA Pom Dance, AA Jazz and AA Lyrical categories. Now the ladies will finish their season this weekend at the IDTA State Competition at the Prairie Capitol Convention Center in Springfield.
“I thought the girls performed very well yesterday and I know they love performing in their home gym,” Highland coach Emily Wellen said. “This weekend gave us confidence and great feedback going into state week for IDTA. We will be working extra hard this week and finish perfecting all three routines in hopes to have a successful IDTA state weekend. It will be our last competition of the season so I know myself and the team will be full of emotions. No matter what happens, I can’t stress enough how proud I am as a coach. My team gives me their all at every practice and competition, and I am so grateful for that.”
Olivia Genteman said it was a very successful weekend for the team and they are now hoping for a clean sweep at state.
“ We have worked harder than ever this year and, as a team, we’re still going to keep going strong,” Genteman said.
The HHS varsity dance team consists of senior co-captains Genteman, Kayla Davis, Katie Etter and Abigail Rogier as well as Bree Etherton, Alexis Finely, Paige Foster, Kylie McFarland, Abbey Mortland, Claire Pabst, Tatum Stock and Brooke Wilson.
