The Highland High School boys golf team finished second at a quadrangular match at the Legacy Golf Course in Granite City on Tuesday of last week.
The Bulldogs shot a four-player team score of 181, which was only three strokes behind Granite City’s winning team score of 178. Triad and Civic Memorial rounded out the quad match.
For the Bulldogs, senior Brode Portell won the match’s medalist honors with a round of 41. Highland also received scores from sophomore Brandon Munie (44), sophomore Ben Brauns (46) and senior Will Michael (50).
Then on Monday, Highland placed third in a triangular match at the Acorns Golf Links in Waterloo. After the Bulldogs had completed four holes, the match was delayed for 45 minutes due to lightning before resuming and finishing.
Mascoutah won the match with a 157. Waterloo was second with a 167 and Highland was a distant third at a 183.
Mascoutah’s Alex Gorman was the match medalist after turning in a round of even-par 36. The Indians also received a 38 from Blake White, a 40 from Matt Hatley and a 43 from Matthew Boigt.
Collin Whelan shot a 38 to lead Waterloo, which also got a round of 41 from Ryan States, a 43 from Chase Whelan and a 45 from Avery Wheat.
Munie carded a 42 to pace Highland, which also had scores turned in by Portell (45), Brauns (48) and Michael (48).
