The Highland High School girls tennis team played the role of a rude guest after opening the season with a convincing 7-2 victory over host Waterloo Gibault on Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs doubled up the Hawks, 4-2, in singles competition and then swept all three of the doubles matches from Gibault.

Highland won all seven of its matches in straight sets.

At No. 3 singles, HHS’ Elisabeth Meadows beat Abbie Meyer 7-5, 6-1.

At the fourth spot, Highland’s Liz Arend downed Sidney Wiegand 6-2, 6-3.

Rounding out the singles victories for the Lady Bulldogs were No. 5 Anjuli Kampwerth swatting Gabby Southworth 6-1, 6-1 and No. 6 Mallory LaFrance discarding Nikki Swindle 6-2, 6-1.

Sweeping the doubles matches for Highland were the top tandem of Kirsten Plocher and Meadows, who blasted Morgan Wiegand and Meyer 6-3, 6-2; the No. 2 duo of Stephanie Olivares and Arend, who crushed Snyder and Sydney Wiegand 6-2, 6-0; and the No. 3 team of Anjuli Kampwerth and Emily Gutzler, who beat Southworth and Emily Larson 7-6 (9-7) and 6-1.

Gibault’s two wins came at the top two singles spots as the Hawks’ Morgan Wiegand defeated Plocher in straight sets at the No. 1 position, while Snyder survived a three-set thriller over Highland’s Olivares in the battle of second seeds, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7.
