Boys Golf: Bulldogs place 11th at Carbondale tourney

The Highland High boys golf team finished in 11th place out of 16 teams at the Carbondale Terrier 2-Man Challenge, which was held Saturday at the Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale.

The tournament format was each two-man team would play best ball on the front nine holes followed by a scramble on the back nine.

Columbia won the tightly contested field with a three-team score of 217. Belleville East followed close behind at 219 with Waterloo (221), Marion (223) and Mascoutah (224) rounding out the top five.

Completing the 16-team field were: Benton (226), Collinsville (228), Carbondale Harrisburg (229), O’Fallon (230), Highland (236), Granite City (237), Mount Vernon (241), Salem (244), Belleville West (248) and Carterville (250).

The top-two winning duos were Carterville’s pairing of Kyle Ettling and Joe Eckhard, who teamed up to win match medalist honors with a sterling round of 65; and the Waterloo tandem of Colin Whelan and Ryan Sites, who ranked second with a 67.

Highland’s top team was that of Brandon Munie and Ben Brauns, who carded a decent round of 75.

Also scoring for the Bulldogs were the duos of Brode Portell and Will Michael (78) and Stephen Schniers and Braden Rehkemper (83).
