Boys Golf: Bulldogs finish 10th at Orphan invite

The Highland High School boys golf team finished in 10th place out of 18 teams Saturday at the Centralia Orphan Invitational at Greenville Golf Course in Centralia.

The Bulldogs brought six players to spit into thee two-man teams and the teams played best-ball format for eight holes.

Highland seniors Brode Portell and Will Michael teamed up to card the team-low round of 72, which was just one stroke away from earning a medal.

Also posting scores to the Bulldogs’ team score of 239 were the sophomore tandem of Ben Brauns and Brandon Munie with a 79 and the sophomore duo of Stephen Schniers and Braden Rehkemper with an 88.

Last Thursday, Highland placed fifth out of six teams at the Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament at Belk Park in Wood River.

Portell stepped up individually with a round of 5-over-par 77, which was good enough to nab third place overall.

On Wednesday of last week, Highland edged Collinsville by shots, 177 to 181, in a dual match at Highland Country Club.

Collinsville’s Mason Groshans was the match medalist with a round of 4-over-par 40.

Portell paced Highland with a 6-over 42. Michael and Brauns were just two strokes back with matching rounds of 44 and Rehkemper rounded out the scoring with a 47.

Also accounting for Collinsville’s scoring were Cody Daech (46), Parker Marchbanks (47) and Jacob Ehlert (48).
