Boys Golf: Bulldogs place third, qualify for sectional

The Highland High School boys golf team finished third at the IHSA Class 2A Alton Marquette Regional Tuesday at the Rolling Hills Golf Course in Godfrey and qualified for next Tuesday’s West Frankfort Sectional. The Highland High School boys golf team extended its season after finishing third at the IHSA Class 2A Alton Marquette Regional Tuesday at the par-71 Rolling Hills Golf Course in Godfrey.

The Bulldogs shot a four-player team score of 341 to take third out of nine teams. Host Alton Marquette turned in a regional-winning score of 308 and Greenville was the runner-up with a 336. All three teams advance to compete at Tuesday’s West Frankfort Sectional, to be played at Franklin Country Club in West Franklin, with a berth for the IHSA Class 2A Boys State Golf Tournament on the line.

Senior Brode Portell, Highland’s No. 1 golfer all season, medaled after carding a solid round of 8-over-par 79, which merited him the overall fifth-place individual medal.

Also posting scores toward the Bulldogs’ sectional-qualifying team score were the sophomore duo of Ben Brauns and Brandon Munie, who each shot 86, as well as sophomore Stephen Schniers, who shot 90.

Also competing at the regional for Highland but not counting toward the team score were senior Will Michael (92) and junior Braden Rehkemper (96).

The Bulldogs edged out rival Triad (344) by three shots for the final team qualifying spot. However, the Knights till qualified three individuals for the sectional, senior Danny Ratulowski (85), sophomore Cameron Lambert (87) and junior Nick Bryan (88).

Senior Gage Brauns led Greenville with a 75 and second-place individual finish.

The Comets also received four rounds of 79 (three of which counted toward the team score) from juniro Nick Messinger, freshman Kolten Bauer, freshman Sam Cogan and junior Duncan McLain.

On Sept. 30, Highland closed out the regular season by finishing second in a triangle match at the par-36 Acorns Golf Links in Waterloo.

HHS shot a four-player team score of 179, which was second to host Waterloo’s 165 but ahead of Triad’s 196.

Brauns turned in a match-low round of 3-over-par 39 to win the match’s overall medalist honors. Brauns’ winning score was two strokes less than the Waterloo’ trio of Chase Whelan, Ryan Stites and Avery Wheat, who all shot matching rounds of 41.

Also posting scores for Highland were Portell (45), Munie (46) and Rehkemper (49).

On Sept. 29, Highland finished second in a triangle match at the par-36 Greenville Country Club.

Greenville won the team title with a 160, with the Bulldogs following with a 169 and Pana bringing up the rear at a 175.

Scoring for Highland were Portell (40), Munie (41), Brauns (43) and Rehkemper (45).
