City social worker will connect citizens in crisis with help, O’Fallon chief says

The city of O’Fallon is adding a full-time social worker to it’s Public Safety Department, Police Chief Kirk Brueggemann said, to proactively support citizens who may be having a mental or social crisis.

Brueggemann, who also serves as public safety director, said he is able to hire this position as part of the police department’s crisis response and intervention program through a grant from the Memorial Hospital Foundation.

“We’re not going to solve everything, but this new person will work hard to make a difference. We can be proactive,” he said.

Brueggemann said the person will serve as an important link between the city’s police, fire, EMS and other local agencies with community members who need support in experiencing a wide range of issues, including homelessness, domestic violence, behavioral health and other emotional, social or psychological issues. The social worker will connect individuals with resources and services, and follow up with them.

“Our officers often encounter individuals in crisis situations where traditional enforcement isn’t the best solution. The addition of a social worker ensures we have the tools and training needed to support those individuals holistically,” Brueggemann said.

As mental health, substance use, and social service needs continue to rise nationwide, the city recognizes the importance of a compassionate approach to public safety, he said.

“Our public safety employees do a wonderful job in handling people in crises, of de-escalating situations. Where we have fallen short before is not having the time nor the experience to followup with people after the calls, and now we will have that capability,” he said.

The full-time salary will be $75,000 per year, and a master’s degree is required in social work, counseling/clinical psychology, marriage and family therapy, or a related field. In addition, the city is seeking someone with at least two years of experience in crisis intervention and providing mental health services to individuals and families.

Brueggeman said the public safety department will collaborate with local organizations to promote mental health awareness and crisis prevention, too.

“We are very fortunate to get this grant through the Memorial Foundation. We’ll be able to make everyone safer and create a supportive environment,” Brueggeman said.

Adding such a position had been discussed for several years, and because of the opportunity, they could move forward, he said.
