Toastmasters welcomes new officers

Hoop talk...Belleville East girls basketball coach Amanda Kemezys returned to her old stomping grounds Friday, when she talked to O’Fallon students who are currently attending a fitness camp held at Carriel Junior High School. Kemezys told the students about her recent trip to the Ukraine. A 2005 Belleville East graduate, Kemezys earlier played four years at St. Louis University before playing two years professionally in Lithuania. Prior to this season, Kemezys served as a volunteer assistant coach at East for two years. She had earlier coached seventh grade boys and eight grade girls basketball at Wolf Branch Middle School and at Carriel previously.

O’Fallon Garden

Club

The O’Fallon Garden Club is holding it’s monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5 at Rock Spring’s Park at 1428 E. Third St. in O’Fallon.

A social period will begin at 6 p.m. for interested individuals wanting to get to know club members better. The program includes an instructional lecture on ‘Intro to Fermentation of Vegetables.’ This will allow attendees to learn about another alternative to canning or freezing because fermentation is another way to preserve food, as well as supplies needed and a few recipes shared with cabbage and other veggies. Club

The Senior Citizens Club of O’Fallon is hosting its picnic, which will include regular business and entertainment starting at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, July 6 at the O’Fallon Township Building located at 801 East State Street.

With military operations continuing in Iraq and Afghanistan, Xi-Chi’s Hope for Heroes program is still in need of support. Part of the support is collecting cell phones to recycle through Cell phones for Soldiers which provides phone cards for deployed military members. There is a continuing need for snack items, toiletries, DVD's and hand held games to be sent to Wounded Warriors returning for treatment along with support to area deployed troops in Afghanistan. The club welcomes and encourages you to donate at several of its local drop-off sites, including SuprTEK, 620 Pierce Blvd., O’Fallon; Crossroad Motors, 7905 N. Illinois, Caseyville; BC Signs, 620 W. O’Fallon Toastmasters meets at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 7, in the Community Financial Center, 800 South Lincoln Ave. Toastmasters is looking forward to a new club year which runs from July 1 to June 30. Toastmasters elects officers in May to give time for training and transition. For the year July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, Toastmasters will have a mix of officers who are well experienced and a few who will be serving for the first time. There will also not be a meeting on July 8 because Amore' Restaurant will be closed.

PSOP part of Elite Group

offering food safety training

Southwestern Illinois College Programs and Services for Older Persons is one of just eight senior centers nationwide selected by the National Institute of Senior Centers to deliver the organization’s “Food Safety 101” training program. During this one-hour training session, older adults will learn about the basics of food safety and specific safe-handling practices for immuno-compromised individuals. Training will be held at 9 a.m., Wednesday, July 27 at PSOP, 201 N. Church St., Belleville. This event is free and open to the public.

Fontebella Golf

Classic

Fontebella Maternity Home of O’Fallon is having its Second Annual Golf Classic to raise money for the women who come to Fontebella facing pregnancy without a safe place to go.

Fontebella is a 501, C-3 nonprofit organization. At 1 p.m. the foursome golf scramble will begin at Stonewolf Golf Club located at 1195 Stonewolf Trail in Fairview Heights. Raffles, prizes and contests available.

On a Jack Nicklaus signature course, the cost is $100 per golfer, which includes green fees, a cart, dinner and two drink tickets. For more information, call (618) 910-0356.

‘Music of the

Night’ 5K Fun

Run/Walk

Registration is now open for this unique, music themed night race, sponsored by Lifelong Music in O’Fallon Schools, and benefiting music education in O’Fallon. The race will be held at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, beginning and ending at Carriel Junior High School.

Register before July 25 to guarantee your race shirt. Cost is $25 for a 50/50 blend race shirt, or $27 for a dri-fit shirt — both with reflective details — $30 on race day (shirts not guaranteed).

Trophies to top three overall, men and women; medals to top three male and female in eight different age groups, plus attendance prizes. Timing by Toolen's Running Start will be provided. Online registration at www.active.com (additional fee required).
