O’Fallon traffic stops were a bit different in September 1925.

A Glen Carbon motorist was heading north on Lincoln from Shiloh. Moving at a fast clip, he crossed over Route 50 without even slowing.

Not stopping before crossing state highways had just been made illegal.

As he passed through the city, though, large holes in Lincoln Avenue. slowed him down a bit.

The driver did not escape the notice of Chief of Police John Tiley who hopped in his car to give chase.

Dodging State Street traffic, and street holes presumably, they both continued north through town. Tiley fired several shots at the car but that only prompted it to go faster. Finally, he overtook it and got the scofflaw to halt.

The driver then tried to bribe Tiley, but off to jail he went. He ended up being fined $8.40 for “failing to make a boulevard stop.”

O’’Fallon will participate in the drive of the state and nation to collect cast-off aluminum for defense purposes, beginning Sat. Aug. 2 and ending Sat. Aug. 9.

The drive will get under way Sat. afternoon at 2 o’clock when, through the courtesy of Hugh McLean, manager of the State Theatre, a feature picture show will be given for the children.

Admission will be an article of castoff or outmoded aluminum of which there is plenty in O’Fallon if the kids will take the time to rummage through their home surroundings.

Schwarz Brothers’ truck will be in front of the theater to receive the aluminum.
