All Team Scott personnel and their dependents are invited to attend the 2018 SAFB Education Fair, “Learning Today ... Leading Tomorrow,” scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Scott AFB Event Center, Bldg. 1560.

This year’s fair is anticipating 60+ colleges, universities, and academic support agencies to attend. A full list of event participants will be released and advertised Aug. 13 on the Scott AFB Education & Training Center Facebook Page and EIM site.

The annual fair provides a consolidated venue for participants to learn about Air Force education programs and services, as well as programs offered through participating colleges, universities, and academic support agencies.

LaDonna Livingston, Scott AFB Education & Training section chief

LaDonna Livingston, Scott AFB Education & Training section chief, said, “The annual fair provides a consolidated venue for participants to learn about Air Force education programs and services, as well as programs offered through participating colleges, universities, and academic support agencies.”

Education fairs are an effective way to gain exposure to many institutions and an opportunity to gather information. They can also be incredibly overwhelming. Large crowds, busy tables, and too many colleges to choose from can keep participants from maximizing the afternoon. To maximize the education fair experience, the Scott AFB Education Office encourages all participants to come prepared.

Before attending the Education Fair, participants should review the list of attending institutions. Reviewing the list prior to attending the event will allow time to research the institutions of interest to them. Participants can use tools such as TA Decide to help aid in the research process.

TA Decide is an information and comparison tool specifically designed to aid participants of DoD’s Tuition Assistance program in making informed choices on school and education programs. Completing research prior to the event will allow participants to ask more in-depth questions when talking to school representatives.

Attending the education fair allowed me to obtain the information I needed to make an informed decision. By speaking with other school representatives I was able to determine I had selected the right program for me.

Maddie Beckmann, SAFB education service specialist, wants all participants to keep in mind, when talking with the school representatives, the goal is to secure answers to questions specific to their interests and needs.

“The time participants have to speak with each representative may be very limited, so it is important to prioritize their questions in order of importance,” Beckmann said. “Remember not to waste time asking questions that can be easily answered through research on the school’s website.”

Airman 1st Class Xavier McGruder, 436th SCOC/GWMO, attended last year’s annual education fair to help solidify his decision of which institution he would attend.

“Attending the education fair allowed me to obtain the information I needed to make an informed decision,” McGruder said. “By speaking with other school representatives I was able to determine I had selected the right program for me. Selecting the program that was the right fit for me was crucial, as I am aware that I am only allowed a one-time degree change, per degree level when using Military Tuition Assistance.

“Everyone attending the education fair should keep an open mind, process all information collected, and take the time to make sure the school and degree are compatible with you.”

Those who attend can also enter the drawing for several attendance prize giveaways. Zeppelins Food & Drink will have lunch available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information regarding the Scott AFB 2018 Education Fair, please contact the Education Center at 256-3327/3328 or 375fss.education@us.af.mil.
