A Columbia man who plead guilty in federal court Thursday to charges that he downloaded videos and images containing child pornography could spend the next 40 years in prison.
Dan S. Daniels, 59, of Columbia entered a guilty plea to one count of receiving child porn and one count of possessing child porn, according to a statement from Southern Illinois U.S. Attorney Stephen Wigginton. Each count carries a maximum 20-year prison term followed by between five years and life on probation. Daniels also may have to pay up to $500,000 in fines.
The statement said undercover investigators with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Springfield Child Exploitation Task Force downloaded 14 images containing child porn from a computer that investigators learned belonged to Daniels. Officers executing a search warrant at Daniels’ home on Oct. 17 seized two computers and a thumb drive containing more videos and images.
Daniels admitted to investigators he used a peer-to-peer program to download and share pornography.
Sentencing is set for Oct. 2.
