Three men were arrested late Monday after they allegedly robbed the Walgreens in Glen Carbon at gunpoint and led police on a chase.
According to Illinois State Police spokesman Calvin Dye Jr., the robbery happened at about 10:30 p.m. The suspects fled in a gray Chevrolet Impala westbound on Interstate 270.
Glen Carbon police chased the men, joined by Brooklyn officers and Illinois State Police troopers, to Illinois 3. They eventually crashed into another car at the entrance to the McKinley Bridge.
Dye said no one was hurt during the crash. The suspects got out of the car and attempted to flee on foot. Two of the three were captured within five minutes. The third suspect was nabbed a short time later after a state police search dog located and then bit him, according to police.
“It was excellent police work on the part of all the agencies involved to capture the suspects so quickly,” Dye said.
Traffic was stopped in both directions on the bridge for about 45 minutes during the pursuit of the suspects Monday night.
According to police radio traffic, one of the suspects was seen throwing what appeared to be a handgun off the bridge into the Mississippi River.
Dye said the suspects have not yet been formally charged so their identities could not be released.
