Wood River woman, 21, killed after car goes into group of people, police say

A 21-year-old woman from Wood River was killed on Sunday after a car went into a group of people in Alton, police said.

According to a press release from Alton Police, a car was driven into a group of people in a parking lot in the 400 block of Belle Street at about 3 a.m. Sunday.

Two women, a 21-year-old and a 25-year-old, were taken to a hospital after the crash. The 21-year-old died from her injuries, according to police. The 25-year-old’s injuries did not appear life-threatening.

A 21-year-old man from Bethalto was arrested in connection with the crash.

In the press release, police said it was too early in the investigation to determine why the crash happened, but it appeared the group of people and the Bethalto man were acquainted.

The investigation was ongoing.
