O’Fallon man charged with DUI, breaking jail cell security camera

An O’Fallon man is charged with driving under the influence and damaging a video camera in his jail cell.

Brandon C. Barker, 22, was charged with one count of criminal damage to government property and one count of driving under the influence. He has been released from custody on bail.

Barker was arrested Thursday and taken to the O’Fallon jail for holding on the DUI charge.

“During the short time here, he damaged one of our video cameras and was charged for it,” said O’Fallon Police Capt. Kirk Brueggeman.

“It happens from time to time,” he said.

The cameras are at ceiling height, and inmates will sometimes climb onto the sink or toilet area and reach the cameras, Brueggeman said.

“Not something terribly uncommon. We don’t like it when it happens, but we’ll deal with it,” he said.

The cell, one of eight at the department, will not be used until the camera is fixed, Brueggman said. As of Monday afternoon, there were no inmates at the jail.
