Police are investigating after a man was shot at 13-16 times while leaving a nightclub Monday night in a Mustang at 59th and State streets.

East St. Louis Detective Ronald McClellan said the man was wounded and police believe he was targeted.

The man was struck and taken to Memorial Hospital in Belleville, but McClellan said there was no immediate medical condition available. Officers were dispatched to the hospital at 1:10 a.m. Tuesday.

The investigation is in the preliminary stage. Police know that the man was at a nightclub on North 59th Street and was involved in an altercation before leaving.

“The victim left the club and he believes some of the guys he got into the altercation with followed him. We have some unconfirmed reports that the shooter fired from a black SUV. And, we also have unconfirmed reports that a second person was grazed,” McClellan said.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to call the East St. Louis Police Department.
