19-year-old shot, killed in what police say is 20th homicide this year in East St. Louis

Police identified a 19-year-old man shot and killed Monday night on 13th Street in East St. Louis as Ziyun Moton, of East St. Louis.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Elbert Jennings said that while investigators do not know of the motive for the shooting they are questioning a person of interest being held in custody.

Jennings said East St. Louis police contacted Illinois State Police for assistance in the investigation after they received a call that someone had been shot in the 1100 block of North 13th Street.

Moton died at a St. Louis hospital, according to Jennings.

Easy St Louis Police Chief Kerry Simon said this the city’s 20th homicide in 2018. Last year, the city had experience 36 homicides by this time.
