O’Fallon man sentenced for sexually abusing girl, attempting to strangle boy
An O’Fallon man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for sexually abusing a now 15-year-old girl for more than two years and physically attacking a now 14-year-old boy.
Carl Scoma, 53, of O’Fallon, was convicted on four felony charges Thursday, sentencing documents from the St. Clair County Circuit Court state.
According to court documents, Scoma sexually touched the girl, who was 12 at the time of the first incident, and secretly recorded her in the shower of her home between January 2014 and August 2016.
In May 2017, Scoma was charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of the girl, two counts of criminal sexual abuse, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and unauthorized video recording. The aggravated criminal sexual abuse charges were dropped, according to the sentencing documents.
Scoma was also convicted of aggravated domestic battery in connection with an incident that happened in 2015, where he put his hands around a then 11-year-old boy’s throat in an attempt to strangle him, court documents state.
“The victims in the case showed great courage throughout the case,” State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly said following Scoma’s sentencing. The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Judy Dala.
