Three men charged in baseball bat assault in Marissa
MARISSA Three men are charged with aggravated battery for a baseball bat attack in Marissa that left a man hospitalized with serious injuries.
Marissa Police Officer Adam Romero received a call about 4 p.m. on Saturday.
“Basically, the caller said there was an individual walking down White Oak Mine Road covered in blood,” Romero said.
Romero found the person, identified as Shawn Staten, and called an ambulance. Staten was taken to St. Louis University Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
“When I got there, he was not really able to talk,” Romero said.
Three men were charged with aggravated battery and mob action in connection with the attack. Charged are: Michael R. Recar, 20, of 708 S. Grace St. Marissa; Alexander P. Barton, 20, of 518 S. Euclid Ave., Marissa, and Kale R. Smith, 19, of 301 Mine Road Lot 18, Mascoutah.
The three men are charged with hitting Staten “about the head and body with a baseball bat” and “knowingly assembled with two or more persons with the intent to commit or facilitate the commission of a felony.”
Romero said he couldn’t discuss what motivated the attack, but all three suspects were acquainted with the victim.
Staten’s condition was not immediately known.
Bail for the three men is set at $75,000 each. They remain in the St. Clair County Jail.
