Investigators are surveying a home in the 500 block of Spring Avenue in Collinsville after firefighters found a man dead inside after extinguishing a fire Thursday night.
Collinsville Fire Chief Mark Emert said that because the fire involved a fatality it will be treated as suspicious unless investigators learn otherwise. Emert said the man’s body was found in the kitchen area of the home. His identity has not yet been determined.
Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn said Friday that preliminary autopsy results indicated the man died of smoke inhalation.
Firefighters arrived to see thick black smoke pouring from the front of the small single-story home at 8:30 p.m. The fire was under control in an hour. Emert said in addition to the deceased, several pets that included dogs and reptiles were inside the home.
“We made resuscitation efforts (on the animals that were injured) on the scene and some were transported to a local animal hospital,” Emert said. The conditions of the animals were not available.
Collinsville fire investigators and investigators from the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal were on scene into the late hours of Thursday night.
