Man charged with attempted murder, domestic battery after allegedly stabbing girlfriend

A St. Clair County man has been accused of attempted murder after sheriff’s deputies say he stabbed his girlfriend multiple times before trying to harm himself.

David A. Bryant, 53, was charged on Thursday with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in St. Clair County Court, according to a release from Capt. Bruce Fleshren stated.

Fleshren said deputies were called to the 200 block of Churchill Drive in unincorporated Belleville for reports of a domestic disturbance. There, they were notified that a 44-year-old female had been stabbed and that she and her 13-year-old son had fled across the street for safety.

When deputies found them at their neighbor’s house, they saw that the woman had been stabbed multiple times in her arms and upper body and had deep cuts on her hands from trying to defend herself, the release stated. The woman’s son was unharmed.

As first responders tended to the woman, deputies and officers form the Belleville Police Department found Bryant, the woman’s boyfriend, in the backyard of their shared home attempting to harm himself with a knife, Fleshren said.

Bryant refused several orders to drop the knife, so officers subdued him with a Taser and were able to take him into custody.

The woman was transported to Memorial Hospital for multiple stab wounds and cuts, but none of her injuries were life-threatening, Fleshren said. Bryant was treated by medical personnel before being transferred to the St. Clair County Jail.

Bryant’s bail was $500,000. He remained in police custody Thursday evening. Bryant has one prior domestic battery arrest from 2018, Fleshren said.
