Woman in police custody following death in Belleville

Belleville police were investigating after a man was found fatally wounded early Saturday.

According to a statement from the Belleville Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call on the 2100 block of Scheel Street at 2:57 a.m. where they found a 27-year-old woman waiting for them outside.

Inside the home, officers found a 31-year-old man bleeding from a wound to the torso, the release stated. Emergency medical services tended to the man and he was taken to a local hospital where he later died from the injury.

The woman at the scene, who has not been identified, remained in police custody pending further investigation Saturday afternoon.

In a statement, the police department said it was “extremely” early in the investigation, but identified the case as “domestic in nature.”
