Woman found dead in front yard of East St. Louis home

East St. Louis Police found the body of a lifeless woman laying in the front yard of a residence in the 800 block of Trendley Avenue early Tuesday morning.

East St. Louis Police Sgt. Cantrell Patterson said the department was called to the scene at 1:09 a.m.

“Upon arrival, officers found an black female laying on the ground and not moving,” Patterson said.

The apparent murder is being jointly investigated by East St. Louis Police and Illinois State police. No potential suspects have been identified, Patterson said.

“We’re in the early stages of a homicide investigation and the victim’s identity is unknown at this time,” Patterson said.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Jerri Hochmuth said anyone who hasn’t heard from or seen a loved one known to frequent the metro-east is asked to call Illinois State Police at 618-346-3990, the East St. Louis Police Department at 618-482-6700 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS. This is an anonymous tip line. If the tip helps police make a felony arrest, the tipster is offered a cash reward of up to $1,000. In homicide cases, the reward is increased up to $5,000 for information that leads police to make a felony arrest.

Patterson said Tuesday morning that the exact cause of death was still unknown. If the death is confirmed as a homicide, it would be the 32nd murder in East St. Louis this year.
