Belleville man airlifted to hospital after being shot in the leg

A Belleville man was airlifted to the hospital on Tuesday night after being shot in the upper leg, police say.

The 43-year-old man, whose identity was not released, was at a residence in the 800 block of Mascoutah Avenue when police found him with a gunshot wound to the upper leg around 7 p.m., a news release stated. According to police, the injury was not life-threatening.

EMS personnel responded and treated the man until ARCH Air Medical Service arrived and transported him to a St. Louis hospital for treatment. According to the police media release, detectives are investigating the circumstances of the shooting but are not seeking any suspects.

“It is early in this investigation, and detectives are still conducting interviews key to this investigation,” the release stated. “Any additional information will be released via BPD Facebook when appropriate.”

A shift commander on duty Tuesday night said he was not authorized to make a statement about the investigation.

Subsequent phone calls to Belleville police public affairs officers and to Chief William Clay were not returned Wednesday. No information on the case was provided prior to the department’s Facebook release at 4:18 p.m. Wednesday.

Anyone with information related to the case can call the Belleville Police Department at 618-234-1212.
