Granite City man charged with kidnapping in St. Louis suburb

A Granite City man faces charges in both Missouri and Illinois for allegedly kidnapping a cafeteria worker from an elementary school in a St. Louis suburb.

Nathan Allen Edwards, 42, has been charged with second-degree kidnapping in Crestwood, Missouri, and with being a fugitive from justice in Madison County.

According to Glen Carbon Police Lt. Wayne White, the department was contacted by Crestwood police on Tuesday asking for assistance in locating a suspect in a kidnapping case.

On Tuesday morning, a cafeteria worker at Long Elementary School in Crestwood was confronted by an ex-boyfriend who forced her into a car before driving off. According to White, Crestwood police tracked the woman’s location to a trailer park in Glen Carbon, which is when they contacted his department.

Glen Carbon police found the woman uninjured outside the trailer and found Edwards inside, where he was taken into custody, White said.

The principal of the elementary school sent a letter to parents and staff about the incident and assured them that no students or staff were in danger during the incident. The school had enacted its lockout procedure.

Edwards remained in police custody at the Madison County Jail on Thursday, a news release from Glen Carbon police stated. He will be extradited to Missouri for the kidnapping charge. His bond is $250,000.
