Major Case Squad recovers vehicle it believes is linked to fatal shooting in Cahokia
The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis said it had recovered a car police believe is linked to the shooting death of Markell DeBerry in Cahokia Monday.
Several people of interest have been interviewed in the case, no suspects were in custody as of Tuesday afternoon, Capt. Bruce Fleshren, deputy commander of the Major Case Squad, said in a news release.
Around 11 a.m. Monday, Cahokia police were called to a report of “shots fired” in front of a vacant home at 35 Delores Drive, where they found 19-year-old DeBerry lying in the street with several gunshot wounds.
DeBerry was taken to Touchette Regional Hospital, where he died.
According to Fleshren, DeBerry was from Edwardsville, but was staying with relatives in Cahokia.
While at the scene of the shooting, police were told about a 21-year-old man who was brought to Touchette with multiple gunshot wounds at the same time as DeBerry. That man was transferred to St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis and underwent surgery for life-threatening injuries.
On Tuesday, Fleshren said the man, who is not being identified, was in stable condition and was cooperating with the police investigation.
No charges had filed as of Tuesday afternoon.
