Belleville police arrest two believed to have robbed local convenience store
A Belleville man and woman have been charged by the St. Clair County State’s Attorney in connection with the robbery of a local convenience store last week.
Steve Madden, 54, and Lindsey Carter, 34, were arrested Saturday with the help of the St. Clair County Drug Tactical Unit.
Madden has been charged with one count of robbery, a class 2 felony, one county of theft from person under $500, a class 3 felony, and one count of possession of methamphetamine under 5 grams, another class 3 felony. Carter was charged with one count of robbery.
Belleville police responded to the reported robbery at Beltline Food Mart, 1721 South Belt West, at around 8:48 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22.
A male employee who was working the cash register told officers and detectives that a man wearing a mask came into the shop and demanded money from the register while holding an “unknown object” in his had. A firearm or weapon was never displayed, police said.
The man tried to hit the cashier, then took the cash register drawer and the cashier’s phone before leaving the store. He entered a silver-colored vehicle that fled westbound from the scene, police say.
Police later located evidence on scene that led them to Madden and Carter, the latter whom police believe was an accomplice in the crime.
Madden’s bond has been set at $60,000, while Carter is being held on $30,000 bond.
