Caseyville Water Department warns residents of scammers posing as employees

The Caseyville Water Department is warning residents in the area of a scam in which individuals posing as employees demand cash from homeowners.

On Thursday, Caseyville police told residents that the department had been investigating the group of individuals.

“It has been brought to our attention that there has been a group of individuals posing as Caseyville Water Department employees, visiting residents requesting cash payment to avoid interruption in water service,” the department’s post on Facebook stated.

According to police, the scammers had tools in their possession to open the water meter pits, and knew how to open the lid and shut down the service. The individuals were wearing hardhats and safety vests “in an attempt to look official,” police said.

The Caseyville Water Department said that, under no circumstance would anyone employed by the Village of Caseyville or the department come to peoples’ homes and ask for payment of any kind on site.

“All payments for water service or any other village provided services are to be collected at Village Hall only,” the department said.

Police have asked anyone who encounters the scammers to call the police department at 618-825-2681.
