Godfrey man charged with attempted murder following Alton stabbing

A Godfrey man has been charged with attempted murder after police say he stabbed a woman in Alton.

Batrail D. Johnson, 44, was arrested Wednesday afternoon. The Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office charged him on Thursday morning.

Johnson did not have a lawyer listed for him in Madison County court on Thursday afternoon.

Police were called to the 1200 block of Belle Street on Sunday for a report of a stabbing in the area, Alton Deputy Chief of Police Marcos Pulido said in a release.

Upon investigation, police discovered the 37-year-old victim, from Edwardsville, had run to a nearby residence after a “known associate” had stabbed her, police said.

The woman is in stable condition at a St. Louis area hospital, Alton Police Sgt. Emily Hejna said.

Circuit Judge Richard Tognarelli set Johnson’s bond at $250,000.
