Collinsville police say man lied about how he suffered gunshot wound

A 25-year-old man has been charged in Madison County Court after Collinsville police say he shot himself in the leg while driving and told them a different story.

Carlton W. Willis was charged with one count of reckless discharge of a firearm and one count of possession of a firearm with a revoked FOID card on Thursday, a news release from the Collinsville Police Department stated. Willis is still at large, police said.

At 3:11 p.m. on Feb. 11, dispatchers received a 911 call from Willis, who told them he had been shot in the leg while walking in the area of Brookhill Court in Collinsville, the release stated. When police arrived, they found Willis in a vehicle on Brookhill Court and he was transported to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment.

Police said a firearm was recovered on scene as well.

Through interviews and evidence analysis, police determined that Willis had actually been driving his car on North Bluff Road when his gun went off and hit him in the leg, the release stated.

Circuit Judge Kyle Napp set Willis’ bond at $15,000.
