Murder charges filed in shooting at East St. Louis public housing complex

First-degree murder charges were filed in connection with the shooting death of an East St. Louis man outside the John DeShields Housing Complex last Saturday.

Travion D. Johnson, 31, East St. Louis is being held at the St. Clair County Jail on $750,000 bond, accused of the murder of Richard R. Jones, 28, also of East St. Louis.

Cortez Slack, chief of public safety for the East St. Louis Housing Authority, said the shooting occurred at 1235 McCasland in the John DeShields Housing Complex.

Slack said Housing Authority security received a call at 3:50 p.m. Jones was not resident, Slack said.

“We arrived on scene a couple of minutes later and found a black male lay on 11th street. We called EMS. He was transported to the hospital,” Slack said.

According to charging documents, Johnson shot Jones with a handgun.

St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. said Jones was pronounced at 5:18 p.m. at Touchette Regional Hospital in Centreville.
