Smithton police hold five suspects in connection with multiple car burglaries

Police have arrested five suspects in connection with multiple car burglaries in Smithton.

The suspects’ names have not been released by police because charges are pending.

Smithton police reported multiple vehicle burglaries occurred on Sunday with five suspects in custody. The department also said burglaries were first reported on April 9.

Smithton police also advised residents in a Facebook post to check their vehicles to see if they were victims and also check their surveillance camera footage.

Residents were asked to call 618-233-0550 if they have any information to report to the police department.

Early Sunday, police said they found an empty holster in the suspect vehicle and were still searching for the firearm but later the department reported that the gun was found at an “undisclosed location” outside of Smithton.

The Smithton Police Department said the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, Millstadt Police and the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force assisted in apprehending the suspects.
