East St. Louis man shot while working on his SUV

A man was shot while he was working on his SUV in East St. Louis Monday evening.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, is in stable condition at an area hospital, according to East St. Louis Police. No arrests have been made.

East St. Louis Police Sgt. Cantrell Patterson said police were notified of a shooting in the 1600 block of North 25th Street at 6:45 p.m. Officers arrived to find the injured man sitting on the ground next to his 1998 Range Rover.

“He had one gun shot wound to his leg and it appeared there was another to his face,” Patterson said. “... He told the officers he was under the hood of his vehicle and heard an engine racing before he turned around and noticed a white four door sedan with two black male subjects in it.”

The man told police one of the men climbed through the sedan’s window with an “assault rifle,” leaned across the roof, and began to fire shots in his direction.

According to Patterson, the victim said he hadn’t had any problems with anybody and had no idea why anyone would want to shoot him.

An Illinois State Police Crime Scene technician was requested to assist in the investigation. Police recovered several spent casings and a bullet fragment, Patterson said.

Anyone with information can call the East St. Louis Police Department at 618-482-6700.
