Madison man charged with first-degree murder in Venice shooting death
A Madison man was charged in a fatal shooting on Market Street in Venice on May 12.
Gerrin L. Massie, 23, faces two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder in the death of Kenneth Stanley Jr., the Madison County State’s Attorney announced Monday.
Massie fired 15 shots into a car occupied by Stanley, 30, and two other men, Erick Buntyn and Jerard McCoy, around 7:30 p.m., according to a release from the state’s attorney. A bullet struck Stanley in the back of the head. He was rushed go Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, where he was pronounced dead.
Massie was taken into custody and remains in Madison County Jail with $2 million bail, the release stated.
A woman, 21-year-old Tahjae Simms, also was charged with obstructing justice in connection with the case.
According to the charging document against her, Simms allegedly told an Illinois State Police agent investigating the shooting that she had no knowledge of Stanley’s killing. Her bail is $200,000.
The case was investigated by Venice police and the Illinois State Police.
