Police investigate after man shot and killed at East St. Louis gas station

An East St. Louis man was shot multiple times on a gas station parking lot and later died at a St. Louis hospital.

The victim, a 38-year-old whose name has not been released, was one of at least two to be wounded by gunfire on the 300 block of River Park Dr. Saturday night.

Sgt. Cantrell Patterson said East St. Louis Police were called to the service station at 306 River Park Drive on the report of shots being fired. A dispatcher told officers there could be as many as three wounded.

“When officers arrived on scene they located a 32-year old man standing on the corner of River Park Drive and Main Street,” Patterson said. “He hollered to police that he had been shot in the leg. A female was helping him into a car.”

The man said he didn’t know what happened or who shot him, Patterson said.

Moments later, officers found a second crime scene where the second man was found badly wounded by multiple gunshots. He was transported to St. Louis University Hospital.

“The hospital let police know the victim died,” Patterson said.

Multiple spent casings from what appeared to be from a 9mm semiautomatic rifle were recovered during an initial investigation, Patterson said.

Police also found a black two-door Dodge Challenger parked at the gas station parking lot and a cellphone nearby. Both were taken by police.

There have been no arrests, Patterson said.
