East St. Louis man says he was shot buying weed, taken to hospital by passing motorist

Police are investigating a report of a man being shot last week after he purchased some weed from an unknown individual.

East St. Louis Police Sgt. Cantrell Patterson said the 28-year-old victim was driven to St. Louis University Hospital by a motorist he said he flagged down.

“The incident happened Thursday and the victim was shot once,” Patterson said.

Police were dispatched to the hospital at 10 p.m to talk to the man.

At the hospital, the victim, who police did not identify, told police he was picked up by an unknown male subject and driven to an unknown location on State Street in East St. Louis to buy marijuana.

“The victim said he as he exited the vehicle of the driver who took him to buy some weed and two male subjects he didn’t know came out of nowhere and the driver started shooting at him,” Patterson said.

The victim also told police “he started running and ran until he stopped a motorist who drove him to the hospital,” Patterson said.

“The victim was not willing to be cooperative with all of the responding officers’ questions,” Patterson said.
