Belleville man found shot in car in East St. Louis, later dies from his injuries

A 29-year-old Belleville man died after police found him in on the passenger side of a car suffering from apparent gunshot wounds in the 2900 block of Louisiana Boulevard in East St. Louis.

Wendell Bennett died after he was taken to a St. Louis hospital, police said.

The St. Louis Medical Examiner’s Office said Bennett died at 9:28 p.m. Monday at St. Louis University Hospital.

East St. Louis Police Sgt. Cantrell Patterson said Bennett had two gunshot wounds and was taken immediately to St. Louis. Officers were called at 7:12 p.m. Monday in reference to a man down.

“State Police are helping with the investigation,” he said.

Witnesses told police they heard several gunshots, Patterson said.

No arrests have been announced in connection with this shooting.

Patterson said he could not discuss what evidence, if any, police have gathered.

“We don’t have any other details at this time,” he said.

Police also are investigating another shooting in East St. Louis this week. In that case, a 29-year-old man was shot when he was at the intersection of North 22nd and State streets on Tuesday night. No arrests have been made in this case and the victim’s condition was not available.
