Swansea man is fifth shot dead in East St. Louis in last four days

NOTE: An original version of this story said Woodhouses death was the sixth murder over four days. It was changed at 10:05 p.m. on July 14 to “fifth confirmed” murder because the cause of death of a body found in a vacant garage is not yet official official.

A 55-year-old Swansea man is the latest homicide victim in East St. Louis. His death marks the city’s fifth confirmed murder investigation opened in the last four days.

St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr., identified the victim as Darwyn A. Woodhouse of East Caroline Street.

Dye said a staff member from his office pronounced the victim at the scene , which was in the 1100 block of Tudor at 11:34 p.m. Monday.

East St. Louis Police Sgt. Cantrell Patterson said police were dispatched to 1130 Tudor at 10:50 p.m. to investigate a call of a shooting and an individual down. Officers found Woodhouse in the driveway of the home.

Paramedics with MedStar arrived on scene, but were not able to to provide assistance.

”The victim was not conscious and was not breathing,” Patterson said. “A vehicle with no one in it was running with doors shut and the headlights off.”

Witnesses at the scene told police they thought they heard fireworks, Patterson said.

Asked about suspects or arrests, Patterson said, “We have neither at this time.”

Woodhouse’s death is East St. Louis’ 20th homicide in 2020.

Anyone with any information to help solve this crime should call Illinois State Police or the East St. Louis Police Department.
