Southwest Illinois police chief says off-duty officer involved in shooting is one of his

The Alorton police chief acknowledged Sunday that the off-duty police officer involved in a shooting at a Centreville nightclub is one of his officers.

But Chief Dave Clark is withholding that officer’s name since there have been no charges filed in the incident, which is being investigated by Illinois State Police.

According to Centreville Detective DeMarius Thomas, two armed gunmen jumped out of car near Club Onyx in the 200 block of Illinois 157 at 2:37 a.m. Saturday and started shooting at an occupied vehicle. The Alorton officer returned the fire.

Clark said Sunday afternoon that he had issued a memo on July 13 making it clear that no Alorton police officers are allowed to make any visits, stop to eat or work secondary security shifts at Club Onyx. He said his memo also was clear that any Alorton officer who took extra hours working security at Club Onyx would face disciplinary action.

But, Clark said the officer involved in the shooting also works for another department. He’s not clear whether the officer was working security at the club under the other department’s authority.

Illinois State Police issued a statement Saturday acknowledging its Division of Criminal Investigations for Zone 6 was asked to investigate the officer-involved shooting incident that occurred by Centreville Police Saturday morning.
