Police say teen with a weapon was shot by officer during a stand-off in Collinsville
A 17-year-old was shot during a stand-off with police on the campus of Collinsville High School on Wednesday night.
At 9:14 p.m., officers with Collinsville Police Department responded to a 911 call of a person who “was in distress” at Collinsville High School, 2201 South Morrison Ave., a news release from Illinois State Police Zone 6 Investigations stated Thursday.
Collinsville police made contact with the person, who was later identified as a 17-year-old male juvenile, the release stated.
The teen pointed a weapon at the officers, the release stated.
“Fearing for their lives, a Collinsville officer discharged his weapon in the protection of himself and other officers on the scene,” the state police news release stated.
The teen was taken to St. Louis University Hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening wound.
No officers or bystanders were injured, the release stated.
Illinois State Police are investigating the shooting.
“At this time, the name of the subject is not being released, pending further investigation and potential charges being sought by the Collinsville (police),” the release stated.
On Thursday evening, Collinsville Commuity Unit School District 10 Superintendent Mark Skertich issued a statement in a news release.
“Collinsville CUSD #10 was notified of an incident that occurred between an individual and law enforcement after school hours,” Skertich wrote in the statement. “The incident is not believed to be school-related and inquiries regarding this matter should be directed to the Collinsville Police Department or the Illinois State Police.”
The results of the state police investigation will be turned over to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
Illinois State Police said it would not release further information Thursday evening.
