Three teens arrested in Cahokia when car they allegedly stole broke down
Three teenagers from St. Louis were arrested shortly after the car they stole from a Cahokia dealership broke down near an agent with the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force Monday.
The three, ages 14, 15, and 16, went to American Motors, 3001 Camp Jackson Road, where they found the 2008 Saturn Outlook with the keys inside.
“It was reported that three male subjects got into a 2008 Saturn Outlook and took it from the lot,” said St. Clair County Sheriff’s Capt. Matt Jany. “The keys were reportedly left in the vehicle because it was in the process of being moved around he car lot.”
The juvenile boys got into the car and headed west on Camp Jackson.
Jany, who is also the director of the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force, said Sheriff’s department deputies were dispatched to the dealership at 3:31 p.m.
“An employee of the dealership saw the theft and tried to follow,” he said. “The vehicle developed mechanical problems on Calvin Boulevard and became disabled. The three occupants jumped out of the car and fled on foot towards Camp Jackson Road.”
An officer with the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force was in the area and heard the call on the police radio. He located the suspects running across Camp Jackson road and arrested them.”
The suspects, who can’t be identified because they’re juveniles, are awaiting a review by the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s office to determine what charges they will face.
