A woman was struck by a vehicle and killed Friday night in the 1000 block of North Belt West.

The victim was identified as Tameka D. Smith, 50, who was last known to be a resident at Townhouse Motel in Belleville.

She was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:20 p.m., St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. said.

Police were dispatched to the 1000 block of North Belt West at 9:12 p.m. after receiving “a 911 call of car vs. pedestrian traffic crash,” according to a press release from the Swansea Police Department.

“Responding officers arrived on scene and discovered a female pedestrian lying in the roadway. An off-duty paramedic happened upon the incident and evaluated the patient who had significant injuries and found no signs of life,” the release said. Additional EMS also arrived.

Officers tended to the driver of the vehicle that struck the woman and started an investigation. No information was released on a medical condition of the driver.

The roadway was shut down in both directions by the Swansea Police Department with assistance from the Belleville Police Department for three and a half hours. It reopened at 12:45 a.m.

The Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Team was called in as part of the overall investigation of the crash.

The press release said the investigation is ongoing and asks anyone with information about the accident or video surveillance to call the Swansea Police Department at 618-233-8114 Ext. 115.
