Centreville police investigate shooting death, the town’s first homicide of the year

NOTE: An earlier version of this story incorrectly listed a Cahokia address for the victim, based on information provided by authorities. It has been corrected.

A 23-year-old Cahokia man was shot in Centreville early Sunday and later died at Touchette Regional Hospital.

The victim, Dale Byrum of South 56th Street, Centreville, was identified by St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. Dye said Byrum was pronounced dead at Touchette Regional Hospital at 3:54 a.m.

Detective Jamal Jackson said Centreville police officers were sent to 904 S. 51st St. after receiving reports that a man had been shot there.

“While officer were trying to locate the residence, the dispatcher informed them the victim had been taken to Touchette Regional Hospital. So, they responded there,” Jackson said.

He said police are in the beginning stages of the investigation and do not have much information.

This is the first homicide of the year in Centreville, Jackson said.
