Fairview Heights police ask for public’s help in finding mall shooting suspect

Fairview Heights police have released surveillance photos of the man they say is a suspect in a shooting at St. Clair Square mall on Tuesday.

In the photos released Wednesday, taken minutes before the incident, the man is among a group of young people walking through the mall and he is pushing a stroller.

According to police, at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to the mall food court for reports of a disturbance between two male acquaintances.

Upon arrival, police learned one of the men had a handgun and had fired gunshots just outside the food court entrance, causing an exterior window to shatter. Both men had left the area when officers arrived.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the men had been arguing before the shots were fired.

A search was conducted and one of the men and a witness were found outside the main mall entrance. The man was taken into custody and transported to the Fairview Heights Police Department, but no firearm was located, police said.

The mall was locked down for about an hour and a half while police searched for the suspect who fired the gun.

The department asked anyone who recognizes the man to contact police at 618-489-2100, leave a tip on the webpage at https://www.fhpd.org or send a private message through its Facebook page.
