Fairview Heights police looking for suspects in weekend MetroLink shooting

Fairview Heights police are searching for three teens they say were involved in a fight where a homeless man was shot on Sunday.

At 8:20 p.m., officers responded to the MetroLink station parking lot on St. Clair Avenue for a report of a fight, a news release from the department said Monday.

Officers found that a 28-year-old man, who police say is homeless, had been shot in the forearm. He was transported to a St. Louis-area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the release stated.

Witnesses told police that while the 28-year-old was alone, there were three other men in their teens who were standing together at the bus stop near the platform. The 28-year-old was pacing, carrying a pipe and “in an agitated state of mind,” according to the release.

A fight broke out between the man and the teens, which resulted in one gunshot being fired. The teens ran west from the scene and have not been seen since, police said. No other injuries were reported during the fight.

“It is unclear who was originally in possession of the firearm since the gunshot occurred while the four participants were actively fighting,” the release stated.

Anyone with information can contact the department by calling 618-489-2100, or by sending a message through its Facebook page or on its website at https://www.fhpd.org.
