St. Elizabeth’s nurse assaulted; O’Fallon man charged

An O’Fallon teen faces felony charges after prosecutors said he assaulted a nurse at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville, breaking her nose and dislocating her shoulder.

Deonte A. Elliot, 19, of 508 Dartmouth in O’Fallon, was charged with aggravated battery with great bodily harm and aggravated battery to a nurse. Both are class three felonies punishable by two to five years in prison.

The charges were filed on Wednesday and state that Elliot “knowingly caused bodily harm to (victim) in that he hit (victim) about the head and body with his hands thereby fracturing her nose and dislocating her elbow knowing (victim) to be a nurse engaged in the performance of her authorized duties as a nurse.”

The case was investigated by Belleville police.

Belleville Det. Sgt. Mark Heffernan said that police received the call about 5:45 a.m. on Monday from the behavioral health unit at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

“It appeared to be an unprovoked attack,” Heffernan said.

The nurse was treated and released, according to Heffernan.

Elliot’s bail was set at $25,000. Elliot was arraigned and taken to St. Clair County Jail on Wednesday morning.
