Madison County police officer airlifted to hospital following shooting

A Pontoon Beach police officer has been airlifted to a St. Louis hospital following a reported shooting at a gas station Tuesday morning.

Fox2 News reported that a helicopter was on standby at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City. Police tape surrounded a portion of the parking lot.

At about 8:30 a.m., the officer was taken by stretcher from the emergency room to the helicopter and has arrived in St. Louis.

Pontoon police cars were stationed outside St. Louis University Hospital by 9:15 a.m.

Officers had responded to the report of a shooting at the Speedway gas station near the intersection of Illinois 111 and Interstate 270 shortly before 8 a.m.

Police from multiple jurisdictions were at the scene, including Illinois State Police. Evidence markers surround a red pickup truck parked at a gas station pump.

The officer has not been identified and it has not been confirmed that the officer was shot. No information was immediately available on suspects in the reported shooting.
