A Wayne County Sheriff’s deputy was found dead Wednesday morning, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

Deputy Sean Riley was responding to call for motorist assistance on I-64 around 5 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office. He was found dead when another officer arrived on the scene. Riley’s car was missing from the scene and then found abandoned on I-64.

The man who officials believe to be the same person who fatally shot Riley is also suspected of carjacking and shooting another person in St. Peters, Missouri around 7 a.m., according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The man carjacked and shot in St. Peters is being treated for non life-threatening injuries.

As of Wednesday at 2 p.m., Illinois State Police had not responded to phone calls or released information about the deputy’s death.

The suspect is described as a white male, last seen wearing a light gray hoodie, backpack and black shoes. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Clinton County Sheriff’s Department Wednesday posted on social media warning residents of the Breese, Jamestown and Beaver Prairie areas to be alert for a tan colored station wagon. The post said two men seen recently in the car were considered armed and dangerous.

It’s not clear if the suspected vehicle is connected with the shootings.

Clinton County Sheriff Dan Travous told the Belleville News-Democrat by phone that no other information was being released.
