Belleville police investigating disturbance on West Main Street
Belleville police officers responded to a report of a disturbance with a gun in the area of West Main and Ninth Street on Monday afternoon, but police later said the report turned out to be false.
“We have two suspects in custody on disorderly conduct charges,” said Police Sgt. Mark Heffernan.
Officers wearing bullet-proof vests searched trash bins and parked cars on Eighth and Ninth Streets on either side of West Main Street in response to a disturbance with a gun about 3 p.m. An hour later, Heffernan said the gun report had been discounted.
A business owner said he heard an ongoing verbal dispute before police arrived around 3 p.m. About a half-dozen police cars and a dozen police officers were in the area, searching in alleys, trash bins, vacant lots and backyards.
