One arrest made after teenager dies in Madison County shooting
One person has been arrested but charges have not yet been filed in the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy on Tuesday in Alton.
Neither the victim’s name nor the suspect’s name have been released by authorities.
Alton Police Chief Jarrett M. Ford said officers responded to a report of a juvenile with a gunshot wound to his chest in the 2600 block of Maxey Street.
Members of the Alton Fire Department administered life-saving procedures but despite their efforts, the teenager died.
Ford said a criminal investigation by the Alton Police Department was started right away.
“Leads and information obtained led to the identification and arrest of a suspect who was eventually taken into custody,” Ford said.
The homicide investigation is a joint effort with the Alton Police Department, the Madison County Coroner’s Office and Illinois State Police.
Ford said once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s office for review.
“This was not a random act if violence,” he said. “All involved parties are known to each other.
“It is always devastating when a young life is taken,” Ford said. “On behalf of the Alton Police Department, we offer our sincerest condolences to the family dealing with this tragic loss.”
