Pedestrian is killed in hit-and-run accident in Belleville, according to police

A pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run accident in Belleville late Monday night died at a St. Louis hospital, according to Belleville police.

The identity of the victim has been withheld pending notification of his family.

A suspect is in custody, according to Assistant Chief Mark Heffernan of the Belleville Police Department.

Officers responded to the accident in the 3600 block of North Belt West about 9:52 p.m., Heffernan said

The male victim was on the side of the road, conscious but with what police described as significant injuries. He was taken to Belleville Memorial Hospital and was later transferred to a St. Louis hospital. Belleville police were informed at 12:39 a.m. Tuesday that the pedestrian had died.

Based on officers’ investigation and canvass of the area for evidence, they were able to identify a suspect vehicle and alerted surrounding police agencies, Heffernan said.

Swansea Police officers located the suspect vehicle in the 1600 block of North Belt West.

“Belleville officers continued to investigate the crash and determined the vehicle Swansea PD stopped was the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run,” Heffernan said. “ Belleville officers further observed the suspect appeared to be intoxicated. The suspect was arrested by Belleville officers and was transported to BPD Headquarters pending further investigation.”

The case remains under investigation.
